El colorismo es una expresión del racismo
Que es el colorismo?
El “colorismo es un término creado por Alice Walker [una autora feminista] y citado por primera vez en 1982 que conceptualiza el hecho de que en cuanto más oscura es la piel de una persona negra, más está sujeta a los prejuicios; en contrapunto, en cuanto más clara es la piel del afrodescendiente y más finos sean sus rasgos, más será visto dentro del patrón europeo y por lo tanto, será más apreciable y tolerable socialmente.” *
Todos estos prejuicios hacia las personas de piel más clara en América Latina pueden estar vinculados al colonialismo, y más específicamente, al sistema de castas español. “Este sistema otorgaba más derechos a aquellos que se acercaran al ideal blanco, mientras que aquellos más oscuros o con los rasgos más alejados a los habituales europeos eran los que en peores condiciones vivían."** De hecho, el objetivo principal del sistema de castas era beneficiar y crear hijos más blancos, solo permitiendo que las personas se casaran por encima o en la misma categoría de castas, lo que resultó en la expresión de “mejorar la raza” que todavía se usa hasta hoy en día.
El colorismo de hoy
El mayor impacto del colorismo en nuestra comunidad es en la eliminación de los afro-latinos. Cuando miramos los medios de comunicación (telenovelas, películas y más) solo hay actores de piel clara, y aquellos con una tez más oscura generalmente están en los papeles de criados o criminales.
Más importantemente, aún con el movimiento y las protestas del Black Lives Matter, ha habido mucho odio por parte de los hispanos/latinos. Muchos no lo apoyan, y en cambio comienzan a disminuir el movimiento y en vez critican que, “nadie pelea por las injusticias de los latinos”. Las injusticias de la comunidad negra, son nuestras injusticias también, porque nuestra comunidad tiene gente negra también.

What is colorism? "Colorism is a term created by Alice Walker [a feminist author] and first cited in 1982 that conceptualizes the fact that the darker the skin of a black person, the more subject he is to prejudice; in counterpoint, the clearer the skin of the Afro-descendant and the finer his features are, the more he will be seen within the European pattern and therefore, the more appreciable and socially tolerable he will be. ”*
All of these prejudices towards lighter-skinned people in Latin America may be linked to colonialism, and more specifically, to the Spanish caste system. "This system granted more rights to those who came close to the white ideal, while those who were darker or with the features farthest from the usual Europeans were those who lived in the worst conditions" (2). In fact, the main objective of the caste system was to benefit and create whiter children, only allowing people to marry above or in the same caste category, which resulted in the expression of "improving the race" that is still use to this day.
The impact of colorism One of the greatest impacts of colorism in our community is in the elimination of Afro-Latinos. When we look at the media (soap operas, movies, tv shows, etc.) there are only light-skinned actors, and those with a darker complexion are generally in the roles of servants or criminals.
More importantly, even with the Black Lives Matter movement and protests, there has been a lot of hatred from Hispanics / Latinos. Many do not support it, and instead begin to diminish the movement and instead criticize that "no one fights for the injustices of Latinos." The injustices of the black community are our injustices too, because our community has black people too.
